DIABETES DIET 

(Type 2 Diabetes / Pre-diabetes – Indian Context)

This is a therapeutic structured diet plan covering:

🅐 – Apple

Benefits: Low GI fruit, rich in soluble fiber (pectin), controls post-meal glucose spikes.

Preparation:

  • Eat whole with peel (do not juice).

  • Can sprinkle cinnamon powder.

Consumption Time:

  • Mid-morning (10–11 AM)

  • Evening snack (4–5 PM)

Best Combination:

  • With 5 soaked almonds

  • With 1 tbsp peanut butter (no sugar added)

Avoid:

  • Apple juice

  • Apple with heavy carb meals


🅑 – Bitter Gourd (Karela)

Benefits: Contains charantin & polypeptide-P (natural insulin-like compounds).

Preparation:

  • Lightly sauté in coconut oil or groundnut oil

  • Steam and add turmeric + jeera

  • Karela juice (50–75 ml max, diluted)

Consumption Time:

  • Morning empty stomach (juice)

  • Lunch as vegetable side dish

Best Combination:

  • With dal + chapati

  • With brown rice in small portion

Avoid:

  • Deep frying

  • Mixing with potato


🅒 – Cinnamon

Benefits: Improves insulin sensitivity.

Preparation:

  • ½ tsp powder in warm water

  • Add to oats / porridge

Consumption Time:

  • Early morning

  • Before bedtime in warm water

Best Combination:

  • With apple

  • With oats

Limit:

  • Not more than 1 tsp per day


🅓 – Dal (Lentils)

Benefits: High protein, low glycemic load.

Preparation:

  • Pressure cook with turmeric

  • Avoid excess oil tadka

Consumption Time:

  • Lunch or dinner

Best Combination:

  • With multigrain chapati

  • With vegetable sabzi

Avoid:

  • Dal + white rice in large portion


🅔 – Eggs

Benefits: High-quality protein, stabilizes blood sugar.

Preparation:

  • Boiled

  • Scrambled with vegetables

Consumption Time:

  • Breakfast

  • Early dinner

Best Combination:

  • With sautéed spinach

  • With millet roti

Avoid:

  • Fried egg in butter

  • With white bread


🅕 – Fenugreek (Methi)

Benefits: Slows carbohydrate absorption.

Preparation:

  • Soak 1 tsp seeds overnight

  • Methi leaves sabzi

Consumption Time:

  • Morning soaked seeds

  • Lunch as vegetable

Best Combination:

  • With chapati

  • With curd (unsweetened)


🅖 – Green Tea

Benefits: Antioxidant, improves metabolism.

Preparation:

  • Steep 2–3 mins (do not overboil)

Consumption Time:

  • Morning

  • Evening (not after 7 PM)

Avoid:

  • Sugar or honey


🅗 – Horse Gram (Kulthi)

Benefits: Good for weight control & sugar regulation.

Preparation:

  • Soaked overnight

  • Cook as soup

Consumption Time:

  • Lunch

  • Early dinner

Best Combination:

  • With vegetable salad


🅘 – Indian Gooseberry (Amla)

Benefits: Improves pancreatic function.

Preparation:

  • Fresh juice (30 ml diluted)

  • Powder with warm water

Consumption Time:

  • Morning empty stomach


🅙 – Jowar (Sorghum)

Benefits: Low GI millet.

Preparation:

  • Jowar roti

  • Jowar porridge

Consumption Time:

  • Lunch

Best Combination:

  • With dal + sabzi


🅚 – Kidney Beans (Rajma)

Benefits: High fiber & protein.

Preparation:

  • Soak 8 hrs

  • Pressure cook well

Consumption Time:

  • Lunch only

Avoid:

  • Heavy rice portion


🅛 – Lemon

Benefits: Reduces glycemic load of meals.

Use:

  • Squeeze on salads

  • Add to warm water

Time:

  • Before meals


🅜 – Millets (Ragi, Foxtail)

Benefits: Slow digestion carbs.

Preparation:

  • Ragi dosa

  • Foxtail millet upma

Time:

  • Breakfast / Lunch


🅝 – Nuts (Almond, Walnut)

Benefits: Healthy fats, reduce sugar spikes.

Portion:

  • 5–8 almonds

  • 2 walnuts

Time:

  • Mid snack


🅞 – Oats

Benefits: Beta-glucan fiber lowers glucose.

Preparation:

  • Plain oats with vegetables

  • No instant flavored oats

Time:

  • Breakfast


🅟 – Pumpkin

Benefits: Low calorie, fiber rich.

Preparation:

  • Steamed or curry

Time:

  • Lunch


🅠 – Quinoa

Benefits: Complete protein grain.

Preparation:

  • Rinse well

  • Cook like rice

Time:

  • Lunch


🅡 – Red Rice

Benefits: Better than polished white rice.

Portion:

  • ½ cup cooked only

🅢 – Spinach

Benefits: Magnesium improves insulin action.

Preparation:

  • Light sauté

  • Add to omelette

  • Turmeric milk (low-fat)

Use:

  • In dosa batter (mix with millet)

Avoid:

  • Plain white rice dosa


🅥 – Vegetables (Non-Starchy)

Examples:
Cabbage, cucumber, beans, bottle gourd

Time:

  • Every meal


🅦 – Water

Intake:

  • 2.5–3 liters daily

Avoid:

  • Sugary drinks


🅧 – Xylitol (Sugar Substitute)

Use carefully:

  • Small quantity only


🅨 – Yogurt (Curd)

Use:

  • Unsweetened

  • Probiotic

Time:

  • Lunch

Role:

🕒 Ideal Daily Timing Pattern (Therapeutic Model)

  • 6 AM – Warm water + methi

  • 8 AM – Protein breakfast

  • 11 AM – Fruit + nuts

  • 1 PM – Controlled carb lunch

  • 4 PM – Green tea

  • 7 PM – Light protein dinner

  • 9 PM – Turmeric milk (optional)
