KIDNEY (RENAL) THERAPEUTIC DIET

A–Z Structured Guide | Preparation + Timing + Food Combining
(For CKD, kidney weakness, renal stones – adjust as per doctor, creatinine, potassium, sodium, phosphorus levels.)


🅰️ A – Apple

Benefits: Low potassium, kidney-friendly fruit, antioxidant rich.
Preparation:

  • Peel (if potassium restriction severe)

  • Slice fresh or stew with little cinnamon

  • No sugar (use small honey if allowed)

Consumption Time:

  • Mid-morning (10–11 AM)

  • Evening snack (4 PM)

Combine With:

  • Oats porridge (small portion)

  • Soaked almonds (2–3 only if potassium allowed)


🅱️ B – Bottle Gourd (Lauki)

Benefits: Light, diuretic, low potassium (when boiled & drained).

Preparation:

  • Peel & chop

  • Boil 5–7 mins → discard water

  • Cook with jeera + small garlic

  • Avoid heavy masala

Consumption Time:

  • Lunch (12–1 PM)

  • Early dinner (6:30 PM)

Combine With:

  • White rice (small portion)

  • Chapati (without salt)

  • Moong dal (leached method)


🅲 C – Cabbage

Benefits: Low potassium, anti-inflammatory.

Preparation:

  • Shred finely

  • Soak in warm water 30 mins

  • Steam or light sauté

Consumption Time:

  • Lunch side dish

  • Evening vegetable soup

Combine With:

  • Carrot (small quantity)

  • Rice kanji


🅳 D – Dal (Moong – controlled)

Benefits: Protein source (limit as per stage).

Preparation:

  • Soak 6–8 hrs

  • Boil & discard first water

  • Pressure cook with turmeric

Consumption Time:

  • Lunch only

  • Avoid at night

Combine With:

  • Rice (protein balance)

  • Boiled vegetables


🅴 E – Egg (If allowed)

Benefits: High quality protein (egg white preferred).

Preparation:

  • Only egg white

  • Boiled or steamed

  • Avoid yolk (high phosphorus)

Consumption Time:

  • Breakfast

  • Post dialysis

Combine With:

  • Toast (white bread small slice)

  • Steamed vegetables


🅵 F – Fenugreek (Methi)

Benefits: Blood sugar control, kidney protective.

Preparation:

  • Soak seeds overnight (½ tsp)

  • Drink soaked water (if potassium normal)

Consumption Time:

  • Early morning (empty stomach)

Combine With:

  • Light breakfast after 30 mins


🅶 G – Garlic

Benefits: Anti-inflammatory, BP control.

Preparation:

  • Crush fresh

  • Light sauté in olive oil

Consumption Time:

  • Add in lunch/dinner cooking

Combine With:

  • All vegetables

  • Soup


🅷 H – Hydration (Water Control)

Rule:

  • Urine output + 500 ml (doctor formula)

  • Avoid excess

Timing:

  • Small sips whole day

  • Avoid heavy drinking at night


🅸 I – Idli (Controlled)

Preparation:

  • Rice-based

  • Avoid too much urad dal

  • No extra salt

Consumption Time:

  • Breakfast only

Combine With:

  • Coconut chutney (small amount)

  • Bottle gourd sambar (light)


🅹 J – Jeera Water

Preparation:

  • Boil ½ tsp jeera

  • Cool & strain

Time:

  • Morning


🅺 K – Kidney Beans (Usually Avoid)

Reason: High potassium & phosphorus

If allowed (rare cases):

  • Soak 12 hrs

  • Double boil method

  • Very small portion


🅻 L – Lemon

Benefits: Prevent stones

Preparation:

  • Few drops in water

Time:

  • Mid-morning


🅼 M – Milk (Restricted)

Rule:

  • ½ cup max (if allowed)

  • Low phosphorus

Time:

  • Morning only


🅽 N – Nuts (Limited)

  • Almond 2–3 soaked

  • Avoid cashew & peanuts


🅾 O – Olive Oil

  • 1–2 tsp/day

  • Cooking medium


🅿 P – Papaya (Small Portion)

  • 3–4 cubes only

  • Morning


🆀 Q – Quinoa (If potassium controlled)

  • Soak well

  • Small serving


🆁 R – Rice (White preferred)

  • Low potassium

  • Controlled portion


🆂 S – Salt Restriction

  • < 5 gm/day

  • Avoid pickle, papad


🆃 T – Tea (Light)

  • Without milk (or minimal)

  • Avoid strong decoction


🆄 U – Urad Dal (Avoid Excess)

  • High potassium


🆅 V – Vegetables (Leaching Method)

Steps:

  1. Peel

  2. Chop small

  3. Soak 2 hrs

  4. Boil & discard water


🆆 W – Watermelon (Small slice only)

  • Morning only


🆇 X – Avoid eXcess Protein

  • Follow nephrologist advice


🆈 Y – Yogurt (Limited)

  • 2–3 tbsp only

  • Daytime only


🆉 Z – Zinc Rich (Pumpkin seeds – rare small use)

  • Only if phosphorus controlled


DAILY SAMPLE TIMING (GENERAL CKD STAGE 2–3)

6:30 AM: Warm jeera water
8:00 AM: Idli + egg white
10:30 AM: Apple
1:00 PM: Rice + bottle gourd + moong dal
4:00 PM: Light tea + papaya
6:30 PM: Chapati + cabbage
8:00 PM: Small water sip only
