THYROID DIET | Therapeutic Diet

THYROID THERAPEUTIC DIET 
Suitable for Hypothyroid & Hyperthyroid management (with minor adjustments mentioned)

⚠ Always consult doctor if on Thyroxine (Levothyroxine) – take medicine early morning empty stomach, and wait 30–60 minutes before food.


🅰 A – ASHWAGANDHA

Benefits: Supports thyroid hormone balance (especially hypothyroid), reduces stress.

Preparation:
• ½ tsp Ashwagandha powder
• Mix in warm milk or warm water

Consumption Time:
• Night before sleep

Join With:
• Turmeric + black pepper (optional)

Avoid If: Hyperthyroid (use only under medical advice)


🅱 B – BRAZIL NUTS

Benefits: Rich in Selenium (essential for thyroid hormone conversion)

Preparation:
• Eat raw (do not roast heavily)

Consumption Time:
• Morning after breakfast

Quantity:
• 1–2 nuts daily (not more)

Join With:
• Soaked almonds


🅲 C – COCONUT

Benefits: Supports metabolism (good for hypothyroid)

Preparation:
• Virgin coconut oil – 1 tsp
• Fresh coconut grated in meals

Consumption Time:
• With breakfast or lunch

Join With:
• Kerala red rice / vegetables


🅳 D – DRUMSTICK LEAVES (Moringa)

Benefits: Rich in iron, calcium, antioxidants

Preparation:
• Light sauté or add to dal
• Avoid overcooking

Consumption Time:
• Lunch

Join With:
• Moong dal / ghee


🅴 E – EGGS

Benefits: Protein + Iodine + Selenium

Preparation:
• Boiled / soft scrambled
• Avoid deep fry

Consumption Time:
• Breakfast

Join With:
• Multigrain roti / vegetables


🅵 F – FLAX SEEDS

Benefits: Omega-3, reduces inflammation

Preparation:
• Dry roast lightly
• Powder and store

Consumption Time:
• 1 tsp morning

Join With:
• Curd / smoothie


🅶 G – GINGER

Benefits: Reduces inflammation, improves digestion

Preparation:
• Ginger tea
• Add to curries

Consumption Time:
• Morning / after meals

Join With:
• Lemon + honey


🅷 H – HIMALAYAN SALT

Benefits: Natural trace minerals

Use:
• Moderate quantity only

⚠ Iodine deficiency suspected? Use iodized salt


🅸 I – IODINE FOODS

Sources:
• Seaweed (small quantity)
• Iodized salt
• Dairy

Consumption:
• Controlled amount (too much iodine worsens thyroid)


🅹 J – JEERA (Cumin)

Benefits: Improves metabolism

Preparation:
• Soak 1 tsp overnight
• Boil and drink

Time:
• Early morning


🅺 K – KELP (Only if iodine deficient)

⚠ Avoid without testing


🅻 L – LENTILS

Benefits: Protein + Iron

Preparation:
• Soaked 6–8 hours
• Pressure cook well

Time:
• Lunch

Join With:
• Lemon juice for iron absorption


🅼 M – MILLETS

Note:
Excess millets (especially raw) may act goitrogenic

Use:
• Cooked well
• Moderate intake


🅽 N – NUTS (Almonds, Walnuts)

Preparation:
• Soaked overnight

Time:
• Morning


🅾 O – OMEGA-3 FOODS

• Fatty fish (Sardine, Mackerel)
• Flax seeds
• Walnuts

Time:
• Lunch


🅿 P – PROBIOTICS

• Homemade curd
• Buttermilk

Time:
• Afternoon


🆀 Q – QUINOA

Preparation:
• Wash well
• Cook 1:2 ratio

Time:
• Lunch / dinner


🆁 R – ROCK SALT

Use moderately


🆂 S – SEEDS (Pumpkin, Sunflower)

Benefits: Zinc rich

Time:
• Evening snack


🆃 T – TURMERIC

Preparation:
• Golden milk

Time:
• Night


🆄 U – URAD DAL

Moderate intake (well cooked only)


🆅 V – VEGETABLES

Best:
• Carrot
• Beetroot
• Pumpkin

⚠ Limit raw cabbage, broccoli (cook well)


🆆 W – WATER

• 2.5–3 liters daily
• Warm water preferred


🆇 X – XANTHUM GUM (Avoid)

Processed food thickener


🆈 Y – YOGURT

• Homemade
• Avoid at night


🆉 Z – ZINC FOODS

• Pumpkin seeds
• Cashews
• Chickpeas


🌿 DAILY SAMPLE THYROID DIET PLAN

6:00 AM – Thyroid medicine (empty stomach)
6:45 AM – Jeera water
8:00 AM – Boiled eggs + multigrain roti
11:00 AM – Nuts + Brazil nut
1:00 PM – Red rice + moringa dal + vegetables
4:30 PM – Buttermilk + seeds
7:30 PM – Quinoa / light dinner
9:00 PM – Golden milk
