IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) – Therapeutic Diet

Preparation, Timing & Food Combinations
(Designed for Indian/Kerala context – vegetarian + non-vegetarian options)

IBS diet mainly focuses on:

  • ✔ Low FODMAP foods

  • ✔ Easy digestion

  • ✔ Gut calming spices

  • ✔ Small, frequent meals

  • ✔ Proper food combinations


🅰 A – Ash Gourd (Kumbalanga)

Benefits: Cooling, reduces acidity, easy to digest.
Preparation:

  • Steam cubes with a pinch of turmeric + cumin.

  • Make light ash gourd soup (boil + blend + add hing).
    Consumption Time: Lunch (best).
    Combine With: Rice, moong dal.
    Avoid Combining With: Curd at night.


🅱 B – Banana (Small Elaichi Banana – Slightly Ripe)

Benefits: Controls diarrhea-type IBS.
Preparation:

  • Eat plain or mash with little ghee.
    Consumption Time: Mid-morning snack (10–11 AM).
    Combine With: Peanut butter (small quantity).
    Avoid: Milk + banana combo (can cause bloating).


🅲 C – Curd (Probiotic – Only if IBS-C not severe)

Benefits: Improves gut bacteria.
Preparation:

  • Fresh homemade curd only.
    Consumption Time: Lunch only.
    Combine With: Rice + jeera powder.
    Avoid: Night consumption.


🅳 D – Drumstick Leaves (Moringa – Small Quantity)

Benefits: Iron + gut repair.
Preparation:

  • Steam lightly; avoid over-spicing.
    Consumption Time: Lunch.
    Combine With: Moong dal.
    Avoid: Gas-forming vegetables same meal.


🅴 E – Egg (If Tolerated)

Benefits: Protein support.
Preparation:

  • Soft boiled / steamed omelette (no onion).
    Consumption Time: Breakfast.
    Combine With: Red rice kanji.
    Avoid: Fried eggs in oil.


🅵 F – Fennel (Perumjeerakam)

Benefits: Reduces bloating.
Preparation:

  • Boil 1 tsp in water – drink warm.
    Consumption Time: After meals.
    Combine With: Cumin water.
    Avoid: Excess intake.


🅶 G – Ginger

Benefits: Reduces nausea + cramps.
Preparation:

  • Ginger tea (without milk).
    Consumption Time: Morning empty stomach (small).
    Combine With: Honey (few drops).
    Avoid: If severe acidity.


🅷 H – Hing (Asafoetida)

Benefits: Reduces gas.
Preparation:

  • Add pinch to tempering.
    Consumption Time: Lunch/Dinner.
    Combine With: Moong dal.
    Avoid: Excess use.


🅸 I – Idli (Fermented Rice – Light)

Benefits: Easy digestion.
Preparation:

  • Well-fermented batter.
    Consumption Time: Breakfast.
    Combine With: Coconut chutney (small).
    Avoid: Sambar with too many vegetables.


🅹 J – Jeera (Cumin)

Benefits: Improves digestion.
Preparation:

  • Jeera water (boiled).
    Consumption Time: Morning or post meal.
    Combine With: Fennel.
    Avoid: Excess.


🅺 K – Kanji (Red Rice Porridge)

Benefits: Gut soothing.
Preparation:

  • Slow cook red rice; thin consistency.
    Consumption Time: Breakfast or Dinner.
    Combine With: Steamed vegetables.
    Avoid: Pickles.


🅻 L – Lauki (Bottle Gourd)

Benefits: Light & calming.
Preparation:

  • Steam curry with minimal spice.
    Consumption Time: Lunch.
    Combine With: Moong dal.
    Avoid: Heavy chapati meal.


🅼 M – Moong Dal (Green Gram – Split)

Benefits: Best tolerated dal.
Preparation:

  • Soak 3 hrs; cook soft; add hing.
    Consumption Time: Lunch.
    Combine With: Rice.
    Avoid: Rajma/chole same day.


🅽 N – Nutmeg (Small pinch)

Benefits: Controls loose motions.
Preparation:

  • Mix pinch in warm water.
    Consumption Time: Night (if diarrhea).
    Avoid: Regular use.


🅾 O – Oats (Plain)

Benefits: Fiber for IBS-C.
Preparation:

  • Cook in water; add chia small qty.
    Consumption Time: Breakfast.
    Combine With: Blueberries (small).
    Avoid: Milk if lactose intolerant.


🅿 P – Papaya (Ripe)

Benefits: Relieves constipation.
Preparation:

  • Fresh cubes only.
    Consumption Time: Evening 4 PM.
    Avoid: With heavy meals.


🆀 Q – Quinoa

Benefits: Gluten-free option.
Preparation:

  • Wash thoroughly; cook like rice.
    Consumption Time: Lunch.
    Combine With: Steamed vegetables.
    Avoid: Spicy gravy.


🆁 R – Rice (Red/White – Moderate)

Benefits: Safe carb base.
Preparation:

  • Soft cooked.
    Consumption Time: Lunch.
    Combine With: Moong dal + ash gourd.
    Avoid: Fried rice.


🆂 S – Sabja (Basil Seeds – Small Qty)

Benefits: Cooling.
Preparation:

  • Soak 15 mins; add to warm water.
    Consumption Time: Mid-morning.
    Avoid: Large quantity.


🆃 T – Turmeric

Benefits: Anti-inflammatory.
Preparation:

  • Add small pinch in cooking.
    Avoid: Raw turmeric milk if lactose issue.


🆄 U – Urad Dal (Limited)

Note: May cause bloating.
Use: Only fermented (idli/dosa).


🆅 V – Vegetable Stew (Low FODMAP)

Use: Carrot, beans, ash gourd.
Avoid: Onion, cauliflower.


🆆 W – Warm Water

Rule: Always drink warm water.
Avoid: Cold water immediately after meals.


🆇 X – (Avoid) Xtra Spices

Avoid:

  • Excess chilli

  • Garam masala

  • Vinegar


🆈 Y – Yogurt (Lactose-Free Option)

Better than normal curd if IBS sensitive.


🆉 Z – Zinc-rich foods

Pumpkin seeds (small qty)
Consume: Mid-morning


⏰ Ideal IBS Meal Timing Plan

  • 🌅 6:30 AM – Warm jeera water

  • 🍳 8:00 AM – Idli / Oats

  • 🍌 10:30 AM – Banana

  • 🍚 1:00 PM – Rice + Moong dal + Lauki

  • 🍵 4:00 PM – Papaya / Herbal tea

  • 🍲 7:00 PM – Light kanji / vegetable soup

  • 💧 Warm water through day


❌ Strictly Avoid in IBS

  • Onion (raw)

  • Garlic (large qty)

  • Cauliflower

  • Cabbage

  • Rajma

  • Chole

  • Fried snacks

  • Bakery items

  • Carbonated drinks
