Kidney Care Diet

🅰 A – Ash Gourd (Kumbalanga / Petha)

Why: Cooling, reduces Pitta, mild diuretic.

Preparation:
• Fresh juice – remove seeds, blend without water
• Or light curry with cumin & coriander

Time:
• Juice – Early morning empty stomach (100–150 ml)
• Curry – Lunch

Best Combination:
• Add few mint leaves in juice
• Curry with red rice or little millet

Avoid:
• Do not add salt in juice
• Avoid with milk


🅱 B – Barley (Yava)

Why: Classical Ayurvedic kidney cleanser.

Preparation:
• Soak 2 tbsp overnight
• Boil in 4 cups water → reduce to half
• Strain – drink as barley water

Time:
• Mid-morning (10–11 AM)
• Can sip throughout day

Best Combination:
• Add 2–3 drops lemon (if no high potassium restriction)
• Can mix with coriander seed water

Avoid:
• Avoid with curd
• Avoid excess salt


🅲 C – Coriander Seed Water (Dhanyaka)

Why: Reduces burning urination & water retention.

Preparation:
• Crush 1 tsp seeds
• Soak overnight in warm water
• Boil lightly in morning & strain

Time:
• Early morning or evening

Combination:
• Can combine with cumin (Jeera)


🅳 D – Drumstick Leaves (Moringa)

Why: Mild detox, improves blood purification.

Preparation:
• Steam lightly
• Make soup with garlic + pepper

Time:
• Lunch only

Avoid:
• Not daily – 2–3 times/week
• Avoid if potassium restricted


🅴 E – Elaichi (Cardamom)

Why: Supports urine flow & digestion.

Preparation:
• Add 1 crushed pod in herbal tea

Time:
• After meals


🅵 F – Fenugreek (Methi)

Why: Reduces inflammation & sugar load (important for diabetic kidney care).

Preparation:
• Soak 1 tsp overnight
• Chew soaked seeds morning

Time:
• Empty stomach

Avoid:
• Not with milk


🅶 G – Garlic (Lahsun)

Why: Reduces creatinine stress & improves circulation.

Preparation:
• Lightly sauté in ghee
• Add in soups

Time:
• Lunch

Avoid:
• Raw in excess


🅷 H – Horse Gram (Kulthi)

Why: Breaks kidney stones (traditional use).

Preparation:
• Soak overnight
• Pressure cook well
• Use as thin soup

Time:
• Lunch only

Avoid:
• Avoid in advanced kidney failure
• Not daily


🅸 I – Indian Gooseberry (Amla)

Why: Rasayana – antioxidant kidney protector.

Preparation:
• Fresh juice diluted
• Or dried powder (½ tsp with warm water)

Time:
• Morning

Avoid:
• Avoid at night


🅹 J – Jeera (Cumin)

Why: Improves digestion → reduces toxin formation.

Preparation:
• Boil ½ tsp in water

Time:
• After meals


🅺 K – Kokum

Why: Cooling & Pitta reducing.

Preparation:
• Soak dried kokum in warm water
• Drink infusion

Time:
• Afternoon


🅻 L – Lauki (Bottle Gourd)

Why: Light, easy to digest, kidney friendly.

Preparation:
• Light curry or soup
• Juice (small quantity)

Time:
• Lunch


🅼 M – Mint (Pudina)

Why: Mild diuretic & cooling.

Preparation:
• Add in chutney
• Add in barley water


🅽 N – Neem (small medicinal use)

Use only under guidance.


🅾 O – Oats (Small portion)

Why: Light fibre support.

Preparation:
• Cook with water only
• Add cumin

Time:
• Breakfast


🅿 P – Pumpkin

Why: Low potassium vegetable (moderate amount).

Preparation:
• Steam & mash
• Add coriander


🆀 Q – Quinoa (Limited)

Use: Small portion only
Avoid if protein restriction advised.


🆁 R – Red Rice (Kerala Matta Rice – small portion)

Why: Traditional, less processed.

Preparation:
• Well cooked soft

Time:
• Lunch


🆂 S – Snake Gourd (Padavalanga)

Why: Light & diuretic.

Preparation:
• Stir fry minimal oil
• Add jeera


🆃 T – Tender Coconut Water

Only if potassium normal.
100 ml max. Morning only.


🆄 U – Urad Dal

Avoid excess (heavy for kidneys).


🆅 V – Vetiver (Ramacham Water)

Preparation:
• Soak vetiver roots in water

Time:
• Summer afternoons


🆆 W – Water (Warm Water Therapy)

• Sip warm water
• Avoid large gulp drinking


🆇 X – Excess Salt (Avoid)

• Avoid pickles
• Avoid packaged foods


🆈 Y – Yogurt (Curd)

• Daytime only
• Diluted as buttermilk
• Avoid at night


🆉 Z – Zinc-rich Seeds (Pumpkin seeds – small)

• 1 tsp roasted
• Morning


🌿 Daily Sample Kidney Care Routine (Ayurvedic Style)

6 AM: Coriander water
7 AM: Amla or Fenugreek
8 AM Breakfast: Oats / Barley porridge
11 AM: Barley water
1 PM Lunch: Red rice + Lauki curry + Snake gourd
4 PM: Kokum drink
7 PM Dinner: Vegetable soup (light)
Throughout: Warm water sipping
